For those that don’t know, there are differences between the various types of protein powders that get used in nutrition supplements. I’ll go through some of the various protein powders that are used in sports supplements:

whey protein concentrate

whey protein isolate

micellar casein

milk protein

soy protein

pea protein

egg white protein

These are just a few I can name of the top of my head, though I’m sure there are others too, these are the most popular.

So what are the benefits of blending protein powders, why not just have one powder?

Well, mainly the reason this is done is to lengthen the time it takes for the body to digest the proteins, thus giving you a longer period of time during which proteins are being released into the blood stream. The thinking behind this is that it will help to keep the body anabolic should your aim be to increase muscle size.

I use a blended protein powder from Boditronics, the express whey product, which contains whey isolate, whey concentrate and micellar casein. I’ve found that since I’ve been using it I feel satieted for hours after having had a shake, literally 3-4 hours, so that’s another benefit of using a blended protein powder.

I found the cheapest place to buy Optimum Health Ultimate Creatine was on Discount Supplements Guide. I can’t remember the retailer that they claimed was the cheapest, but I do remember that it was only £8.99 delivered, which is pretty cheap for 500 grams of creatine!

There really isn’t much more that can be reviewed with a basic creatine powder, except the price and whether it works, and it works and it’s cheap!

I’ve just bought some new protein powder to try. I had been using Boditronics Express Whey, and I really like it, it’s a great tasting protein shake. However, because it contains micellar casein, I have decided to stop using it. This is because I seem to get a bad chest from using it, and wonder if this is something to do with the casein or the pro-biotics it contains. It may well be nothing and I could end up going back to it, but for now want to try a different protein shake.

I found the cheapest place to buy the Dymatize Elite Whey Protein on DiscountSupplementsGuide.com, I think they just refer you onto the cheapest retailer. I paid £26.99 delivered for a 5lb / 2.25kg tub.

Dymatize Elite Whey contains just whey protein, in isolate and concentrate form (including Di-Peptides, Tri-Peptides, Oligo-Peptides and Poly-Peptides) as well as whey peptides.

From the nutritional label it looks like it doesn’t have any additional amino acids or bcaa’s added, so it is just a plain whey protein powder, though the whey protein isolate is ion-exchanged and the whey protein concentrate is cross flow ultra filtered!

The powder is 73% protein, 0% sugars, 7.6% carbohydrate and 6% fat.

A 50 gram portion would therefore provide the following nutrition:

36.5 grams of protein (146 calories)

3.8 grams of carbs (15 calories)

3 grams of fat (27 calories)

Total calories: 188

Zero Impact Calories!

Looking at this info, this will be a good protein powder for anyone trying to maintain low blood sugar levels, or avoid blood sugar spikes. From looking at the nutrition data, it looks like the carbohydrate is either medium or low GI, which is good as far as avoiding blood sugar spikes are concerned.

I’ve been tempted to try some PhD Nutrition Pharma Whey since I tried their Diet Whey product a few months back, the reason being – it tasted really good!

Before I do buy this product, I wanted to see whether it had any micellar casein in it, as I’ve been using Boditronics Express Whey this month, and while it is a great tasting and mixing shake, it does seem to give me phlegm, which I assume is the casein as it never happened when I used just whey protein concentrate.

Looking at the PhD Nutrition website, according to the nutritional information about Pharm Whey there is only whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate, so no casein – good start!

In addition to the great whey protein that it contains, it also has added Branch Chain Amino Acids and L-Glutamine which will help with anti-catabolism and general muscle building.

The other benefit that it has over other whey protein powders is the addition of pre-biotics, which help with digestion and maintaining healthy levels of bacteria in the digestive system.

The powder is 80% protein, 6.58% sugars, 6.4% fat, with the rest being made up of non-sugar carbs, fibre and amino acids.

So a 50gram portion will provide:

160 calories from protein

13 calories from sugars

29 calories from fats

total calories 202

impact calories 13

The fact that there is fat in the shake rather than lots of simple carbs is a good thing as far as I’m concerned – I’d much prefer to have low-GI fat energy than high-GI sugar energy in my food.

The glycemic load of this serving would be a measly 3.29.
